As you know from my Dragon’s Den appearance, Dairy Free ice cream is a subject I am passionate about.
Fortunately, vegan ice cream has moved on dramatically from the sweet and kind of flavourless brands that I started out against.
To help you out on those hot summer days (fingers crossed) which can be so testing with a Dairy allergy, here’s my pick of the best Dairy Free ice creams out there:
Booja Booja
Booja Booja‘s creamy range of cashew-based ice-creams come in a wide range of flavours, including Raspberry Ripple, Caramel Pecan Praline, Chocolate Salted Caramel, Hazelnut Chocolate Truffle, Vanilla and Hunky Punky Chocolate.
We’re fans of Booja Booja and their ice creams are no exception. We love that cashews form the base of their ice creams, even though it does make the plainer flavours like vanilla taste a little ‘nutty’. For us though the sweetness level is good and the texture works well.
Available in Waitrose, Ocado and independent stores.
They are all gluten, soya & dairy free but obviously contain nuts.
Alpro
Alpro’s vegan ice-creams contain 30% less sugar and 30% less saturated fats than similar dairy products and are just 600 calories per tub. In our opinion the sweetness levels and texture are great, but the soya leaves a slight bitter after taste.
Available in all major supermarkets.
The range is Free From Dairy & Gluten, but contains Soya and may Contain Nuts.
Magnum
A Magnum’s dairy-free, vegan ice creams feature vanilla-flavoured pea protein-based ice-cream coated in 70% vegan Belgian chocolate.
This ice cream tastes at least as good as the non vegan magnum, being very picky the Dark Chocolate whilst delicious, is a little bit grainy.
Available to purchase in Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Ocado.
Made with a Dairy free recipe but may Contain Milk.
Swedish Glace
Swedish Glace’s range has coconut based options and soya based options. It has the same texture and sweet milky taste as soft serve ice cream, whilst for me it’s a little too sweet, it’s a definite hit with our dairy free kids.
Available in all major supermarkets.
Free From Dairy, Gluten & Lactose, Contains Soya.
Ben & Jerry’s
Unfortunately Ben & Jerry’s recent Vegan ice-cream launches contain a lot of allergens, including Wheat & Barley, but their big flavours and chunky texture means it’s hard to believe there is no dairy in it.
Available to purchase in Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Morrisons, as well as selected independent stores.
Contains Almonds, Contains Barley, May Contain Nuts, May Contain Peanuts, Contains Soya, Contains Wheat.
Wall’s Cornetto
Cornetto the gluten free cones are filled with a creamy soya-based ice cream. The ice cream tastes great and has a good texture and aftertaste, but the cone isn’t quite as nice as classic Cornetto, but it’s still very tasty.
Available to purchase in Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Waitrose and Ocado.
May Contain Milk warning on Cornetto. Contains Soy and Hazelnuts.
